Foundation for Young Leaders
The work of LIW's Foundation for Young Leaders (FYL) is capturing the interest of educationalists as well as business leaders internationally. The reason is simple - those young people who get a strong foundation in leadership skills stand a far better chance of success in their education, their work and their personal lives than those who do not.
Young people discover how to set higher aspirations about what is possible for themselves in their studies, extra-curricular activities and future lives. The FYL runs inspirational events supported by IT applications. In this way, young people develop both the hard skills and soft skills of leadership. They take away the tools to keep these skills alive, allowing them to lead themselves and others in the longer term.
The FYL recognises that if you lay foundations young, then once out in the workplace people can raise the bar even higher.
Each young person completes a personal Visual Success Map (VSM), a workable and living reminder of what they want to achieve and how to get there. This can be regularly updated and shared with teachers, adult support workers and sports coaches to monitor progress, review actions and celebrate success. Already many young people have built their confidence and made courageous decisions to enable them to accomplish life changing goals.
"It's clear that what the FYL is doing is desperately needed. Without such leadership development, we'll find it increasingly difficult to compete in the future. It's a smashing idea."
